  • Take the other person seriously.
  • Make time, listen, offer support or comfort.
  • Ask what the other person needs.
  • Ask if the other person wants to take action.
  • Tell them to contact their manager.
  • If this doesn’t feel right, tell them to contact one of the confidential advisors.
  • Contact the same confidential advisors if you need help or want to talk to someone.

What can help you?

  • Don’t judge too quickly.
  • Use the LSD technique: Listen, Summarise, Ask Open-ended Questions. It helps!
  • Ask open questions starting with who, what, where, when, and how.
  • Show that you understand the other person’s feelings. For example, say, “I notice this affects you. How are you feeling now?

Who can help you?

Ask someone you know and trust for help. If talking to your supervisor doesn’t feel good or doesn’t help, you can always talk to the confidential advisors at UMC Utrecht. Even if you have doubts. It can help prevent a situation from getting worse. Remember that all conversations between employees and these support services are confidential.
