Someone has confided in me

What can you do?

  • Take the other person seriously.
  • Make time, listen, offer support or comfort.
  • Ask what the other needs.
  • Ask if the other wants to take action.
  • Refer them to their manager.
  • If this doesn’t feel right, refer them to one of the counselors
  • If you need support yourself or you just want to talk about it with someone, you can contact the counselors as well.

What can help you?

  • Do not judge too quickly.
  • It helps to listen, summarize and dig deeper. This technique can help you.
  • Ask open-ended questions starting with who, what, where, when or how.
  • Show that you are sympathetic to the other person and take their feelings seriously. Say, for example: “I can see it affects you. How are you doing?”

Who can help you?

Ask support from someone you trust. If it doesn’t feel right to discuss something with your manager, or if it doesn’t help, you can always contact the counselors of UMC Utrecht. Even if you are in doubt. It can keep a situation from getting worse. All conversations between staff members and these helplines are confidential.
