Someone has confided in me

What can you do?

  • Take the other person seriously.
  • Make time, listen, offer support or comfort.
  • Ask what the other needs.
  • Ask if the other wants to take action.
  • Refer them to the study adviser.
  • If this doesn’t feel right, refer them to another helpline. Click here for their details.
  • If you need support yourself or you just want to talk about it with someone, you can contact the same helplines.

What can help you?

  • Do not judge too quickly.
  • It helps to listen, summarize and dig deeper. This technique can help you.
  • Ask open-ended questions starting with who, what, where, when or how.
  • Show that you are sympathetic to the other person and take their feelings seriously. Say, for example: I can see it affects you. How are you doing?

Who can help you?

Ask support from someone you trust. Such as a fellow student, friend, lecturer or supervisor. It is also important to report what you experienced. That way, we gain insight into what has happened and we can take action where necessary. You can also make your report anonymously. You decide. There are several people you can turn to for this, within both UMC Utrecht and Utrecht University. Are you not sure who to contact? Then always contact your study adviser first. They can help you clarify your needs and help you on your way to getting the right help.
