What can you do?

  • Take the other person seriously.
  • Make time, listen, offer support or comfort.
  • Ask what the other person needs.
  • Ask if the other person wants to take action.
  • Tell them to contact their supervisor.
  • If this doesn’t feel right, refer to one of the confidential advisors.
  • Contact the same confidential advisors if you need help or want to talk to someone.

What can help you?

  • Don’t judge too quickly.
  • Use the LSD technique: Listen, Summarise, Ask Open-ended Questions. It helps!
  • Ask open questions starting with who, what, where, when, and how.
  • Show that you understand the other person’s feelings. For example, say, “I notice this affects you. How are you feeling now?”

Who can help you?

Ask someone you know and trust for help. This person could be a fellow student, friend, teacher, or mentor. It’s important to share your problems with someone. This helps us understand what happened, and we can take action if needed. You can report the issues anonymously if you prefer. The choice is yours. There are different people you can talk to, both at UMC Utrecht and the University of Utrecht. If you’re unsure whom to approach, go to your academic advisor. They will help you identify your needs, suggest actions, and find support. View all confidential advisors here.
